In 2025, the People, Parks & Community Foundation received 121 grant applications. The volume of applications in our inaugural year underscores the widespread need for financial assistance across Pennsylvania. As applications were reviewed, it became clear that park and recreation departments—regardless of size or whether they serve urban, suburban, or rural communities—share many common challenges.
Two themes emerged repeatedly: inclusive recreation and sustainable recreation. Creating facilities and programs that are accessible to everyone remains a significant challenge. Inclusive recreation ensures that all individuals—including people with disabilities, older adults, and economically disadvantaged populations—have equal access to safe, meaningful recreational opportunities.
Sustainable recreation, meanwhile, focuses on minimizing environmental impact, preserving ecosystems, and encouraging conservation-minded outdoor enjoyment. Many applicants cited rising costs, transportation barriers, and the lack of accessible infrastructure as obstacles that limit participation in outdoor activities. Grant requests frequently sought funding for inclusive design improvements and community outreach to address these issues.
The Foundation was proud to recognize several communities working toward these goals. Bedford Borough received funding to design and construct an ADA-compliant walking trail. The City of Clairton purchased aquatic and beach wheelchairs to enhance accessibility at its public pool. The City of Johnstown was awarded funds to establish a “pocket park” on a vacant lot in a blighted area of the city.
Supporting sustainable and inclusive recreation is not just a guiding principle of the Foundation—it is a moral, environmental, and social imperative. By investing in these communities, we affirm that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience joy, connection, and meaningful leisure. Promoting diversity and inclusion in recreation strengthens community programs, making them more engaging, resilient, and impactful.
